        Pietrasanta

Moroni's Palace Botero temporary exhibition in the Cathedral's Square
The historical centre of Pietrasanta, with its smart Cathedral Square, is one of the most charming centres in the area. The marble facade and the brick bell-tower of St. Martin's Cathedral (built in 1526-1528) stand out particularly well. The Museo dei Bozzetti (Museum of Machetes) is located in an old convent, in one of the corners of the square. It contains models and moulds of sculptures, mainly in chalk, realised by the numerous artists who have worked or are currently working in the marble workshops and foundries in Versilia.

The Pretorio Palace and the Moroni's Palace, the latter as the seat of the small but interesting Archaeological Museum, are only a few metres away from the Museum of Machetes. The imposing Rocca di Sala dominates the town. Moreover in Valdicastello, in the proximity of Pietrasanta, the house where the poet Giosuè Carducci was born in 1835 is well worth a visit.

Pietrasanta, as a centre for the working of marble and the art of sculpting, has been since immemorial time the meeting place of artists and sculptors, from the Age of Michelangelo to Henry Moore and Mirò. Among the artists who have worked here are: Igor Mitoraj and Fernando Botero who donated some of their works to the town.

The town is full of marble workshops and foundries, with a particular emphasis on the realisation of contemporary works of art. A tour of Pietrasanta wouldn't be complete without a visit to one of these places where so many famous work of art have been created.
